Every year, small business owners start thinking about holiday marketing right around Thanksgiving. By then, the customers they want are already deep into their shopping, and Google has already decided which businesses show up when they search.

This year the stakes are bigger than ever. Adobe forecasts that U.S. shoppers will spend a record $275.1 billion online between November 1 and December 31, up 6.7% from last year, with more than half of that spending happening on phones. A big share of those purchases start with a search.

The businesses that win those searches in December are usually the ones that started preparing in October. Here’s why timing matters so much, and the fixes you can still make right now to be ready when the rush hits.

Why SEO Needs a Head Start

Ads work like a light switch. You turn them on and traffic shows up the same day, as long as you keep paying. SEO works more like planting a garden. The work you do today pays off weeks or months from now, and then it keeps paying off without a per-click bill.

Google says this plainly in its own SEO Starter Guide: after you make changes to your site, some take effect in a few hours, while others can take several months to show up in search results. Google has to crawl your updated pages, understand them, and decide where they deserve to rank against everyone else competing for the same searches.

That lag is exactly why October matters. A page you publish or improve today has time to get indexed and start climbing before Black Friday. The same page published on December 10 might not rank until the holidays are over. 6 Holiday SEO Fixes to Make This October

1. Get your Google Business Profile holiday-ready

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a shopper sees, before they ever reach your website. Make sure your description, photos, and services are current, and add your holiday hours now using Google’s special hours setting. Google recommends confirming holiday hours even if they match your regular schedule, because it tells shoppers (and Google) that your information is reliable. Nothing loses a customer faster than showing up to a locked door on December 23.

If you haven’t set up or claimed your profile yet, read the power of a Google Business account for local businesses. You can also make it easier for customers to reach you by adding WhatsApp to your Google Business Profile.

2. Refresh your key pages with seasonal keywords

Think about how people actually search this time of year. They don’t just type “bakery.” They type “holiday cookie platters near me” or “Christmas cakes Lancaster CA.” Update your most important service and product pages so they mention the seasonal versions of what you sell, in natural language. Fresh, relevant updates also give Google a reason to recrawl those pages sooner.

3. Build a holiday landing page or gift guide

A dedicated page for your holiday offers, gift ideas, or seasonal services gives Google something specific to rank for holiday searches. Here’s the trick: keep the same URL every year (something like /holiday-gift-guide/) and update the content each season. That way the page builds authority over time instead of starting from zero every November.

4. Speed up your site on mobile

With most holiday shopping happening on phones, a slow mobile site costs you sales and rankings. Run your homepage and top pages through Google’s PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues it flags, which are usually oversized images, too many plugins, or heavy scripts. If you’re not sure whether your site is holding you back, our post on whether your website is costing you customers walks through the warning signs.

5. Make your name, address, and phone number consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your business details across your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and local directories. When your name, address, and phone number (NAP) don’t match, Google trusts your listing less, and that can push you down in local results. Spend an hour checking every listing you can find and fix anything outdated, from an old phone number to “Suite 28” written three different ways.

6. Ask your happiest customers for reviews now

Reviews are one of the strongest signals in local search, and holiday shoppers lean on them heavily when choosing between businesses they don’t know. Ask recent customers for a Google review now so they’re in place before the rush. A simple follow-up text or email with a direct review link works better than you’d expect.

Your Holiday SEO Timeline

October is for the work that takes time to show results. Publish or refresh your holiday pages, clean up your listings, fix speed issues, and start asking for reviews. This is the window where your changes still have room to get indexed and climb.

November is for fine-tuning. Check which pages are getting impressions in Google Search Console, tighten the ones that are close to page one, and confirm your holiday hours before Thanksgiving. Cyber Week alone is expected to drive $47.5 billion in online spending, so you want everything locked in before Black Friday.

December is for staying visible. Keep your Google Business Profile active with posts and photos, answer reviews quickly, and update hours for last-minute changes. Then take notes on what worked, because next year’s holiday SEO starts the moment this season ends.

Don’t Wait Until December

The businesses ranking on page one this holiday season aren’t lucky. They started early. The good news is that October still gives you enough runway to make real progress, as long as you start now.
